Feel The Crunch of Homemade Potato Chips

34
I have not met a person yet that doesn't love the crunch of well seasoned potato chips. What keeps a lot of us from over indulging on a bag of chips is the unhealthy factor. Like you all, we too love our chips but wanted to stop feeling so guilty every time we at them. So started the search for a healthier homemade version that was not too difficult to recreate.

TaDa!! We managed to do just that with the help of Shaina Olmanson from Food For My Family and a little tweaking of my own.

So long as you have not just blown up your computer keyboard with drool, let's get started with baking some for yourself.

You will need the following items:

Potatoes
Pot or Bowl Full of Cold Water
Extra Virgin Olive Oil
Bowl
Mandolin
Sea Salt or Flavored Popcorn Seasoning

Start off by heating your oven to a toasty warm 400ยบ.

Scrub your potatoes well ....

Slice them very thinly with your mandolin .. make sure to do this part carefully. JrBear learned this lesson when helping me this time around. The potato end slipped and he sliced the top of his thumb...OUCH~!

Once all your potatoes are sliced up, place them all in to a big pot or bowl of ice cold water to soak. I leave them to soak for 30 minutes in cold water to draw out most of, if not all the starch from them. This way they cook faster and a little more evenly when in the oven.

When your 30 minutes is up remove some of the potato slices from the water and place them in between two tea towels to dry. Feel free to move this along by patting all over the top tea towel to help draw out any remaining water.

After they are dry toss all of your potatoes in to a bowl and douse them in EVOO...mix well, making sure to coat both sides of all the potatoes.

Next place them on a parchment covered baking sheet...in one even single layer.

At this point if your are just using sea salt to season feel free to dust it on.

Bake in the oven for 10-15 minutes (time will vary by oven...10 minutes is enough in ours)...remove and flip each one over before placing them back in to the oven for another 5-7 minutes.

Now crunch your way into delicious homemade potato chips.

Trust me when I say you will never want to go back to store bought. The flavor options are endless with all those popcorn seasonings or making your own homemade spices to sprinkle on them. So far we have just tried sea salt and salt and vinegar...both of which are delicious. I have not made Shaina's dip yet but definitely plan to give that a try very soon. If you try these and have a go at the dip please come back and let me know your thoughts.

Now Go Be Brave...and stay away from store bought junk...instead make your own at home.
